Alzheimer’s Research UK and Alzheimer’s Society have joined forces as Charity of the Year for the 2019 Virgin Money London Marathon. The charities have named this one-year campaign the Dementia Revolution, and hope to raise £3.5m for the most ambitious dementia research endeavour the UK has ever seen – the UK Dementia Research Institute.
Together, the two charities have decided to make a stand against dementia in an effort to reassure the public that dementia is not a lost cause.
Dementia is an umbrella term for conditions that affect memory, language, thinking and our ability to solve problems and make decisions. There are various forms of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease (where nerve cells die, causing damage to structure of the brain) vascular dementia (caused due to problems with blood supply to the brain), mixed dementia (which normally means Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia), dementia with Lewy bodies (abnormal deposits that damage brain cells) and frontotemporal dementia (where the frontal lobes of the brain are damaged).
